CHALLENGE

Kurumbuka is a nonprofit organization dedicated to leadership training, education, and business funding across Africa. Unlike many ‘Africa-focused’ groups that adopt a savior-victim narrative, Kurumbuka sought to position its cohorts as empowered partners — educated, goal-oriented individuals actively driving systemic change in their communities.

They approached me to design an annual report that would highlight their financial progress, challenges, and organizational activities. The report needed to be engaging, bright, and compelling — a key tool for communicating with stakeholders and securing funding from current and potential donors.

SOLUTION AND IMPACT:

I began with an in-depth review of Kurumbuka’s brand, social media metrics, and community engagement. We also analyzed annual reports from comparable organizations. Based on this research, we renamed the publication to the 'Impact Report', emphasizing present achievements and future growth.

The design focused on showcasing scholarship and award recipients as confident leaders and businesspeople — a refreshing shift from typical portrayals. From photography and attire to the writing style, the spotlight was on African leaders driving change in partnership with Western support, rather than on the organization itself.

OUTCOMES:

The result was a visually stunning, highly engaging report that contributed to securing a new round of funding for the upcoming year — and was enthusiastically received by all stakeholders.

DESIGN:

We employed bright, impactful colors aligned with Kurumbuka’s brand palette, supplemented by additional hues for contrast and softness. Illustrations were added to break up text-heavy pages, enhancing readability and visual appeal.

To maximize reach and engagement, we published the report digitally via an e-reader platform optimized for social sharing and long-term accessibility.
